How To Lose Weight on Low Carb Diets: In general, the inhabitants of first world countries are becoming fatter.

In fact, the increasing level of obesity is worrying governments as they realise that the resulting deterioration in health is costing government-funded health services dearly.

In many cases already stretched health services are finding it difficult to cope as obesity becomes a major health factor.

Dieting helps people lose weight with resulting health benefits.

According to government statistics, 65% of Americans are overweight, however, 38% of overweight Americans are trying to combat their excess weight through dieting and exercise.

According to the National Health Institute, a third of people trying to lose excess weight are cutting their carbohydrate intake in order to achieve their weight goals.

This phenomenon of lower carb intake has largely been as a result of the increased popularity of specifically designed low carb diets such as the Atkins Diet and the South Beach Diet.

As work and the fear of lay-offs grow, the pace of life appears to be growing faster and quickly.

These fears have always occurred in our lives, but they previously appeared in waves when the world moved between economic growth and stagnation.

Now in a modern world, these pressures have become almost constant.

Therefore, any successful diet must be simple to implement; diet items must not be difficult to find; meals cannot be hard to prepare.

Dieters have just no more time and simply do not want to be exposed to more stress in their life.

Low carb dieting certainly isn’t new.

There have previously been low-carb diets, and I am sure there will be more low-carb diets in future years.

The question is how comfortably and easily low carb diets satisfy the requirements of a modern diet.

Does it fit into a modern lifestyle? Is it effective?

We’ll have a look at the more popular or better known low carb diets and also at a few basic terms and definitions to help understand low carb diets.

Different Carbohydrate Types – Low Carb and Slow Carb

Low Carb Diets

Two kinds of carbohydrates are simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. These could be thought of as good (complex) and bad (simple) carbohydrates or slow and fast carbohydrates. Slow carbs break down into energy over a longer period whilst fast carbs deliver a spurt of energy very quickly, but are soon extinguished.

Simple Carbs

Example of simple carbohydrates is cane sugar, cakes and candies/ sweets, white bread, bananas and sodas, fizzy drinks containing high sugar levels.

These simple carbohydrates are commonly called refined carbohydrates of low nutrients.

It is digested quickly and is highly glycemic and can produce a rapid blood sugar spike, causing a rapid initial increase in energy with tiredness.

The extent to which individual bodies react varies from person to person in accordance with their bodies ability to deal with simple carbs. Most health professionals recommend that one limits their intake of this type of carbohydrate.

Complex Carbs 

Examples of complex carbohydrates are fruit and vegetables (some exceptions), legumes, sprouts, and whole grains.

The higher content of complex carbohydrates usually leads to slower digestion, so energy can be released over a long period of time. These foods have a low to moderate glycemic index.

These foods are considered healthy and are a good choice and are recommended by dieticians as part of a balanced diet. Examples would include whole grains, legumes and most fruit and vegetables.

Use Common Sense

Studies show that low carb diets help with weight loss However, the carbs should be of the complex, low glycemic type. Of course, that doesn’t mean that one must totally avoid simple carbs, but try to limit intake.

A treat every now and then is fine. Remember besides your health and weight loss, your teeth should improve too as they won’t have to contend with the potential build-up of sugar decay from the simple carbs.
